The Vice Chancellor’s Challenge Fund 2023 received an overwhelming response with twenty-four expressions of interest submitted. Out of these, thirteen projects were selected to present at the highly anticipated Pitch Event on Thursday 18th May, where university staff and students eagerly gathered to learn more about the applicant’s proposals.

The audience was captivated by the Freezing Global Warming project, which ultimately emerged as the winner of the audience vote. This groundbreaking initiative aims to tackle the pressing issue of Global Warming by harnessing the power of nature.

The concept behind the Freezing Global Warming project is simple yet brilliant. Trees, known for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide, will be strategically planted to extract this harmful greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. However, the project goes a step further by implementing long-term carbon capture through the prevention of organic decomposition of the timber.

This innovative approach holds immense potential in reversing climate change. By utilizing trees as natural carbon sinks and ensuring the captured carbon is unable to return to the atmosphere, the Freezing Global Warming project offers a sustainable and long-lasting solution.
